COVID 19 and Fetal Growth Restriction
Dr. Andrea Shields
COVID-19 has been linked to several adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) including preterm delivery, low birth weight, fetal growth restriction, stillbirth, and preeclampsia-like syndrome. These APOs result in higher NICU admissions, co-morbidities of asphyxia-related complications, hyperbilirubinemia and increased neonatal mortality. Placental insufficiency is one of the major causes of small gestational age (SGA) and fetal growth restriction (FGR), but there is limited data on COVID-19 and its effect on fetal growth. This study will investigate how pregnancies complicated by COVID-19 impact fetal growth compared to pregnancies that do not have COVID, specifically by analyzing placentas from each group of pregnancies.
