IRB No. 25-160-2 (Dr. Hardeep Singh, PI): Recovery Kinetics Following Surgical Treatment for Degenerative L4-5 Spondylolisthesis: A pilot and Feasibility Study
Specific Aim(s) Evaluate recovery kinetics in patients undergoing lateral lumbar interbody fusion via prone approach + minimally invasive posterior spinal fusion (LLIF + PSF), minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion via tubular based retractor (MIS TLIF + PSF), and open transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (Open TLIF + PSF) through monitoring step count during hospital stay and post operatively using a wearable fitness tracker. Compare length of stay, narcotic consumption, radiographic parameters, and fusion between groups outlined above.
IRB No. 25-201HS-1 (Dr. Christopher Conner, PI): Mechanisms of VNS for Stroke
Patients suffering from upper extremity weakness after stroke undergo occupational and physical rehabilitation to return to their regular activities. Many people never completely regain their old function. A new FDA approved therapy, paired-Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) rehab, has been shown to have significant benefits over traditional rehabilitation. These patients are currently undergoing surgery for implantation of a VNS system and then complete specialized occupational therapy (OT). Our group aims to study why paired-VNS rehab is more effective than traditional rehab using non-invasive brain studies. We will collect MRIs and electroencephalograms (EEGs) on patients before and after their therapy to see how the brain responds and changes due to this therapy.
